Beach House - Wishes - Bloom (2012)

Bloom drops today. One word review = Visceral.

It’s hard to describe the immediate visceral reaction I’ve had to Beach House’s latest. It’s one of those albums that I can’t stop listening to and, when I do, it stays with me…Lingering for hours on end.

It’s so flippin’ good it gnaws at me.

“…The contact that you make
The moment when a memory aches
Who can tell?
You do it well
Wishes on a wheel
How’s it supposed to feel?”

Lyrics.

Click “#Beach House” for a taste of a couple tunes from the album. I highly recommend purchasing it.

Beautiful song…

Sounds really fun! Love David Sedaris. Also, Taylor Dayne?!? That’s a blast from the past.

I don’t really remember her but the name was familiar. Tig’s routine was about how she kept bumping into her randomly, and how each time she’d tell her that she loved her voice, using the exact same words, and how Taylor reacted (not very nicely). But then at the end, they brought out Taylor to sing to her. It seemed like she had no idea that was going to happen, which made it even funnier.

I convinced a friend to come with me to the “This American Life Live” show tonight and I’m so glad I did. It was structured like the radio show, in five acts, and hosted by Ira Glass, but with features that they can’t usually do on the radio. They had a dance troupe, a short film by Mike Birbiglia featuring Terry Gross, a stand-up routine by Tig Notaro about Taylor Dayne, and a segment about a previously unknown photographer named Vivian Maier. Even the radio-ready contributors were enhanced; David Rakoff danced (despite having lost use of his left arm), and David Sedaris appeared in full clown makeup. Ok Go also played, and they had created an app that featured three tones (there were five or so different versions) so we could all play along with them. If anyone is considering going to the encore show next Tuesday, I’d highly recommend it.

Since I’m a huge David Sedaris fan, I was really glad to see that he was added to the show at the last minute. He read a story from his diary that I heard last year when I saw him in person, about being behind an incredibly annoying couple at a hotel coffee shop. I think he may have shortened it a little, but it was still hilarious. Ira Glass related an anecdote his sister in law (?) who went to one of Sedaris’ shows and met him afterward at the book signing. She said she was surprised that he was so much nicer than he seemed in his books, and she told him so. And he told her, “Oh, I’m not really nice. I’m just two faced.”
